VAGABOND M A T T E R
B e g i n n i n g s | Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre, Bangor - April 2016
We’re very excited to have begun research on our upcoming project Vagabond Matter.
We recently spent time at the fantastic Pontio arts and innovation centre, Bangor, in conversation with Dr. Andy Goodman Ph.D (Dir. Design Innovation, Pontio), Dr. Emily Cross Ph.D (Cognitive Neuroscientist, Senior Lecturer, Bangor University) and John Story (Design Engineer, Pontio), discussing our collaboration, and forming the groundwork for some the show’s concepts.
From complexity science to neuroaesthetics, from the ant to the supernova. Every question’s answer begged ten more, our heads and notebooks were full. Beginning research on a project in the truest sense, we left Pontio overwhelmed but raring for more.
Formerly Monsoon, Vagabond Matter has been orbiting for over a year, with its numerous spikes of ideas and inspirations filling note books and drawing pads. While at Pontio we had time to sit down together and streamline, throw out and consolidate the ideas we’d gathered, with the aim of creating a cohesive aesthetic and conceptual starting line.

Research areas:
The Umwelt: What we know so far
Vagabond Matter’s core themes revolve around the idea of Umwelt - ‘the world as it is experienced by a particular organism.' As human beings we exist in a specific perspective, a reality defined by our five calibrated senses. With Vagabond Matter we want to step outside this middle world and create an altered perspective: a sense of awe at unseen worlds that surround us. Under our feet, inside our own bodies, and above our heads. The micro to the macro. The areas we’re currently exploring are: Primary: - Innovation and creativity as defining aspects of humanity - Circus as an approach to matter: humans and the physical world Secondary: - Creation and destruction - Space exploration, the future and legacy of Humanity |

What will Vagabond Matter look like?
Currently, we know that Vagabond Matter will take place after dark, and will likely have an episodic structure.
The primary visual and performance elements will be:
- Dance-circus
- Film and projection mapping (as an example, we’re looking at the possibility of visualising Spectroscopy in a live context)
- An engineered structure enabling the use of circus physicality without circus equipment or setting
Our goal regarding the physical content of the show is to work at the centre of the Venn diagram of these three elements - to create at the meeting point between bodies, light and materials.
THE SET
We are designing a set with diverse functions in mind. We’re looking at ways of visually creating and altering the sense of scale and place, the potential for physical transformation, and its integration with lighting and projection mapping.
A space where we can create extremes, and that itself has its own presence as another physical performer.
